South African President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) and the Giza Pyramids this week, accompanied by Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy, as part of his visit to Egypt.

Ramaphosa toured the GEM, where he viewed a number of its archaeological collections and learned about the museum’s displays showcasing Egypt’s ancient civilization.
The South African president also visited the Giza Pyramids, one of Egypt’s most prominent tourist attractions.

The visit came on the sidelines of the African Union’s eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, held in New Alamein, where Ramaphosa participated in discussions with African leaders on continental cooperation and integration.

Egypt and South Africa maintain longstanding political and economic ties, with both countries emphasizing the importance of strengthening cooperation across a range of fields, including tourism, culture and investment.
Also, Ramaphosa’s visit to Egypt’s major archaeological landmarks underscored the cultural and tourism dimensions of the longstanding relationship between the two African countries.
