The National Bank of Egypt (NBE), the country’s first and largest commercial bank, achieved a pre-tax profit of EGP 312.5bn for the financial year ending Dec. 31, 2025, the state lender announced following its general assembly meeting on Monday.
Established in June 1898, NBE holds a 38% market share in Egypt. The bank recorded a net profit after tax of EGP 175.5bn for 2025, up from EGP 133.3bn in the previous year.
Total assets expanded by 13% to EGP 9.2 trillion in December 2025, compared with EGP 8.1 trillion in 2024, and continued growing to reach approximately EGP 10.6 trillion by the end of August 2026.
Total equity rose by EGP 156bn year-on-year to reach EGP 690bn. Customer deposits increased 15% to EGP 5.7 trillion in December 2025, an addition of EGP 734bn from 2024, before rising further to EGP 6.4 trillion by August 2026. The bank’s total client base grew to 21.7 million in 2025 from 21.5 million in 2024.
NBE loan portfolio and asset quality
NBE’s total loan portfolio across customers and banks expanded by 22% to EGP 4.8 trillion in 2025, compared to EGP 3.9 trillion in 2024, reaching EGP 5.8 trillion by August 2026. Corporate loans grew 23%, or EGP 779bn, to EGP 4.2 trillion, compared to EGP 3.4 trillion in 2024. Retail lending reached EGP 438bn in December 2025, marking a 23% growth over 2024. Financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) rose 13% to EGP 195bn.
The non-performing loan (NPL) ratio stood at 0.8% of total loans in December 2025, down from 0.9% in December 2024. NBE completed debt settlements for 8,089 irregular clients with total liabilities of EGP 35.1bn. Collections from defaulted debts reached EGP 8.2bn in December 2025, up from EGP 5.8bn in 2024.
NBE digital transaction growth and global footprint
Digital transaction volumes via the InstaPay network reached approximately 717 million transfers valued at EGP 2.87 trillion in 2025, representing a 91% increase in transaction value compared to EGP 1.5 trillion across 333 million transfers in 2024.
Domestically, NBE expanded its nationwide network to over 700 branches and banking units, supported by 7,572 automated teller machines (ATMs) and 758,000 point-of-sale (POS) terminals. It reported 1.9 million credit cards and 8.4 million debit cards in circulation.
The lender also maintains a vital international presence, operating subsidiaries in London and Khartoum, branches in New York, Shanghai, Juba, and Riyadh, and representative offices in Johannesburg, Dubai, and Addis Ababa.
The bank allocated EGP 2bn to corporate social responsibility initiatives targeting healthcare, education, slum redevelopment, female-headed households, and support for persons with disabilities.
