The Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF), specifically its Menelik Command, has reported significant territorial gains across multiple areas in Ethiopia’s North and South Wollo zones. According to DNE Africa sources, around 471 soldiers of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) were killed, and 175 others captured. These claimed victories signify a notable escalation in the conflict between AFNF and the Ethiopian federal government.

Understanding Fano
Fano, an Amharic term meaning “freedom fighter,” describes a grassroots movement comprising civilians from diverse backgrounds. Historically, Fano’s roots trace back to resistance against the Italian fascist occupation in the 1930s. Today, the group asserts its role as a protector of the Amhara people, advocating for their existence and rights against what it perceives as injustices under the current federal government led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Formation of the Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF)

Six months ago, a coalition of four Fano organisations from across the Amhara region unified to form the AFNF. This includes groups from Gondar, Shewa, Wollo, and Gojam. The newly formed AFNF is now guided by 13 central commands, a structure believed to have enhanced Fano’s military coordination and effectiveness.
Amhara Fano’s Popular Support
Fano reportedly enjoys extensive popular backing, particularly among the rural Amhara population, who view the group as a defence against the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF). Its popularity is attributed to its perceived dedication to Amhara interests and its resistance to federal government policies.
AFNF Gains in North Wollo Zone
In North Wollo, the Menelik Command asserts control over key towns within Gidan Woreda, including Kul Mesk, Muja, and Wondach. The force also claims a significant breakthrough in the Bekilo Manekiya area of Guba Lafto Woreda, where it reportedly overran government strongholds and captured military hardware.
Furthermore, AFNF forces claim to have seized a militarily strategic location in Angot Woreda, North Wollo Zone. According to Fano sources, this gives them control over vital routes connecting Woldiya to Lalibela and Woldiya to Bahir Dar.
Developments in South Wollo Zone
In South Wollo’s Worebabo Woreda, intense fighting is ongoing in Bistima town, Gubisana, and Guya. AFNF sources indicate that the Gubisa stronghold, previously an ENDF camp, has been overrun, and Bistima town is now allegedly under Fano control.

Reported Casualties and Equipment Capture
The AFNF claims substantial successes in terms of casualties inflicted and equipment captured from the ENDF:
- ENDF Casualties: 471 troops reportedly killed.
- ENDF Captures: 175 troops reportedly captured.
- Seized Military Equipment:
- 6 DShK heavy machine guns
- 6 Mortars with multiple launchers
- 9 Military radios
- 438 Kalashnikov AK47
- 14 PKM machine guns
- Over 52,600 rounds of various ammunition
- 9 Dragunov sniper rifles
- 138 F1 grenades
- A full Sino truck with military equipment and rations

Amhara Fano Territorial Claims and Administration
Fano claims to control over 75% of the Amhara region, asserting that the government’s presence is largely confined to major towns and main highways. This aligns with recent announcements from the organisation regarding its expanding territorial influence. Reports also suggest that significant numbers of government troops have defected or surrendered during the conflict.
Outlook
The reported victories by the AFNF’s Menelik Command in North and South Wollo zones signify a critical phase in the ongoing conflict. The situation remains complex and volatile, with both AFNF and the Ethiopian government demonstrating entrenched positions. The humanitarian impact on civilians caught amidst the fighting is anticipated to remain a significant concern.
