The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has strongly condemned an aerial strike that destroyed two of its humanitarian aid trucks in Sudan’s South Kordofan State, warning that repeated attacks on relief operations are worsening the humanitarian crisis in the conflict-ridden country.
According to the WFP, the attack occurred on August 30 outside the city of Dilling as a convoy carrying food assistance was traveling to Kadugli. The agency said the vehicles were clearly marked with WFP banners and flags when they were struck.
The strike destroyed more than 50 metric tons of food supplies, including cereals, yellow split peas, vegetable oil and salt. The lost assistance was enough to provide food for about 5,800 people experiencing severe hunger for an entire month.
“The destruction of these supplies comes at a time when humanitarian needs in Sudan remain at critical levels,” the agency said, affirming that the attack further undermines efforts to reach vulnerable communities affected by conflict and displacement.
Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan State, remains one of the areas most affected by food insecurity. The WFP currently assists around 58,000 people in the city who are facing emergency levels of hunger.
The agency noted that the latest incident is the eighth aerial attack targeting WFP operations or facilities in Sudan since the beginning of 2026, highlighting the growing risks faced by humanitarian workers delivering life-saving assistance across the country.
Also, the WFP called on warring factions to halt attacks on aid operations and allow the safe and uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian assistance to populations in need.
Sudan has been grappling with one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises since conflict erupted in April 2023, displacing millions of people and pushing large parts of the country toward acute food insecurity. Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned that continued violence, access constraints and attacks on aid infrastructure are hampering efforts to reach vulnerable populations.
