Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has announced the introduction of a new electronic visa (e-visa) system for citizens of countries that require Senegalese nationals to obtain entry visas. The policy, framed around the principle of reciprocity, is part of a broader national plan to boost economic and social recovery under the strategic vision “Senegal 2050.”
Unveiled during a major economic policy briefing attended by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the initiative aims to reinforce national sovereignty and generate an estimated 60 billion CFA francs (about $108 million) annually in visa revenue. The government confirmed that all applicants from outside Africa will be required to prepay visa fees.
Although implementation details are still pending, countries likely to be affected include France, the US, Canada, the UK, and China — all of which currently impose visa restrictions on Senegalese citizens. The move follows similar steps by other African nations, including Namibia, and signals a growing regional effort to assert diplomatic parity in global mobility policies.
