Mali and Russia Strengthen Economic Ties in Energy, Agriculture, and Infrastructure

Russia and Mali are making significant strides in deepening their economic cooperation, with a focus on energy, agriculture, and infrastructure, as reported by Igor Gromyko, the Russian Ambassador to Mali and Niger. The expansion of ties between the two nations was recently discussed following the visit of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak to Bamako in early December. During the visit, high-level discussions centered around strengthening bilateral relations across multiple sectors, including energy, transportation, mining, agriculture, and infrastructure. These discussions have resulted in the formulation of new agreements aimed at bolstering mutually beneficial economic collaboration.

One of the most notable developments is the exploration of nuclear energy cooperation. Both Russia and Mali are currently in discussions regarding the construction of a small-scale nuclear power plant in Mali. This marks a significant step in enhancing Mali’s energy infrastructure, with Russia playing a key role in facilitating the development of nuclear technology. The involvement of Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy company, Rosatom, has been crucial, as it is not only engaged in nuclear infrastructure projects but also in providing training to local professionals, ensuring the sustainable development of the country’s energy sector.

In addition to nuclear energy, both nations are also focused on expanding their renewable energy initiatives. A 200 MW solar power plant project, which began construction in May 2024, is set to be a major milestone in Mali’s energy diversification efforts. This solar plant, located near the capital city of Bamako, is being developed with the involvement of Novavind, a Russian company owned by Rosatom. The completion of this project is expected to provide a substantial boost to Mali’s energy capacity, addressing energy shortages and supporting the country’s long-term economic growth.

Beyond energy, the two nations are also strengthening their cooperation in agriculture and infrastructure. The discussions between Russian and Malian officials have highlighted the potential for agricultural development, with a focus on improving food security, enhancing agricultural productivity, and exploring new technologies to modernize the sector. Additionally, transportation and infrastructure projects are also on the agenda, with a shared interest in improving connectivity and facilitating trade.

The deepening relationship between Russia and Mali comes at a time when both countries are seeking to expand their influence on the international stage. Russia’s involvement in Mali’s development is seen as part of a broader effort to establish stronger ties with African nations, with a focus on providing technological expertise, investment, and infrastructure development. For Mali, these agreements are seen as crucial steps in advancing its national development goals, improving its energy security, and fostering economic growth through diversification.

The expanding economic partnership between Russia and Mali is poised to have significant long-term benefits for both countries, with a focus on energy security, agricultural development, and infrastructure improvement. The ongoing projects and agreements signify a growing commitment to cooperation and the shared goal of sustainable development in Mali.
