Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago have inked an Air Services Agreement aimed at strengthening air connectivity between West Africa and the Caribbean and creating new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment.

The agreement was signed on Sept. 22 during a bilateral meeting between Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York.

In his remarks, Mahama said the agreement would strengthen air connectivity and create new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

The pact establishes a framework for air services between Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago, with the two governments expecting improved connectivity to support the movement of people and goods and strengthen economic and people-to-people ties.

The agreement forms part of Trinidad and Tobago’s broader efforts to expand its international aviation network and strengthen connections with Africa and Latin America, according to the country’s government.

The Ghana-Trinidad and Tobago agreement comes amid efforts by both countries to deepen bilateral relations beyond aviation.

During their meeting, Mahama and Persad-Bissessar also discussed trade and investment, air transportation and reparations, according to Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.

The agreement could provide a framework for closer commercial and diplomatic engagement between Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago while strengthening links between Africa and the Caribbean.
