In a decisive move toward fostering regional stability and economic growth, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during a high-level visit to Ethiopia on Saturday. This significant engagement reflects the deepening ties between the two nations and their commitment to addressing shared challenges in the Horn of Africa.

The visit comes as part of broader efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, enhance security cooperation, and expedite economic collaboration. During the talks, both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to restoring full diplomatic representation in their respective capitals, underscoring their shared vision for a more interconnected and prosperous region. A joint communique issued after the meeting outlined key areas of collaboration, including security, trade, infrastructure development, and the implementation of the Ankara Declaration.

A Unified Approach to Regional Security

One of the central issues discussed was the escalating threat posed by extremist militant groups in the Horn of Africa. The leaders emphasized the urgent need for coordinated efforts to combat these threats, which continue to undermine stability and development in the region. Both governments agreed to enhance collaboration between their security agencies, focusing on intelligence sharing, joint operations, and capacity building to effectively address evolving security challenges.

Prime Minister Abiy and President Mohamud stressed the importance of mutual trust and confidence in fostering a secure environment for their nations and the broader region. The leaders acknowledged that regional security is a shared responsibility, requiring sustained cooperation and a unified approach to tackle threats such as terrorism, cross-border crimes, and instability.

Advancing Economic Collaboration

Economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with both leaders recognizing the immense potential for trade, investment, and infrastructure development to drive shared prosperity. Ethiopia and Somalia, two nations with rich natural resources and strategic geographic positions, are uniquely positioned to benefit from enhanced economic collaboration.

The leaders agreed to prioritize the expansion of infrastructure connections, including transportation networks, communication systems, and energy projects. These initiatives aim to facilitate the movement of goods and services, improve regional connectivity, and attract foreign investment. By developing robust infrastructure, the two nations hope to unlock economic opportunities that will benefit their citizens and strengthen the broader Horn of Africa.

Trade was also identified as a key area of focus, with both leaders pledging to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. They discussed strategies to reduce trade barriers, streamline customs processes, and promote cross-border commerce. Enhanced trade relations between Ethiopia and Somalia are expected to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and improve the livelihoods of millions across the region.

Commitment to the Ankara Declaration

Another crucial aspect of the talks was the reaffirmation of the Ankara Declaration, a foundational agreement that embodies the spirit of friendship and solidarity between Ethiopia and Somalia. The declaration, which outlines a framework for bilateral cooperation, has been instrumental in guiding relations between the two nations.

During the meeting, the leaders pledged to expedite technical discussions to ensure the swift implementation of the declaration’s provisions. They emphasized the importance of translating diplomatic commitments into tangible outcomes that directly benefit their citizens. The Ankara Declaration serves as a testament to the shared values and aspirations of Ethiopia and Somalia, highlighting their determination to work together in pursuit of peace and development.

A Vision for a United Horn of Africa

The strengthened partnership between Ethiopia and Somalia represents a broader vision for the Horn of Africa—one rooted in unity, collaboration, and shared progress. By prioritizing security, economic growth, and diplomatic cooperation, the two nations are setting a powerful example for regional integration.

Their collaborative efforts are expected to inspire neighboring countries to join in fostering a more stable and prosperous Horn of Africa. This renewed alliance not only addresses immediate challenges but also lays the groundwork for long-term development and regional stability.

As Ethiopia and Somalia move forward, their commitment to mutual respect and collective action will undoubtedly shape the future of the region. This partnership offers a blueprint for addressing complex challenges, promoting sustainable development, and building a peaceful and prosperous future for all.
