Brazil and South Africa have signed a Memorandum of Intent that marks a new stage in bilateral agricultural cooperation, with a strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and food security, according to a report by El Maipo, a partner of TV BRICS.

The agreement was concluded on the sidelines of the G20 Agricultural Working Group meeting in the Western Cape by South Africa’s Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, and Brazil’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Luiz De Alcantara Rua.

The memorandum sets out a framework for closer collaboration over the next five years, including technical exchanges, joint training programmes, study visits, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices. It also provides for cooperation in livestock systems, quality assurance standards, and measures to improve consumer protection.

The partnership also includes facilitating trade through business missions and agricultural fairs, opening new opportunities for market access. Agricultural trade between the two nations has already shown strong growth in recent years, expanding by more than 80 per cent between 2020 and 2024.

To ensure effective implementation, a Joint Working Group will be established to define priority areas and draft a detailed action plan, ensuring progress is aligned with the strategic interests of both partners.
