At least 40 farmers have been killed in a violent attack by militants affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) in the Dumba area of Nigeria’s Borno state, local reports have confirmed. The assault took place near the border with Chad, outside a designated agricultural security zone that is notorious for militant activities and hidden landmines. The shocking incident underscores the persistent threat posed by insurgents in the region.
Speaking to the media, Borno State Information Commissioner Usman Tar provided details of the tragedy. “Preliminary reports suggest that approximately 40 farmers lost their lives in the attack. Efforts are ongoing to locate survivors who managed to escape the onslaught, and we are working to reunite them with their families,” he said.
The gruesome attack highlights the precarious situation in northeastern Nigeria, where communities remain vulnerable to the persistent threat of militant groups. The Dumba area, situated within the volatile Lake Chad region, has been a long-standing hotspot for insurgent activity. Farmers in the region, striving to earn their livelihoods, often face life-threatening risks due to the lack of security and the presence of extremist elements.
Government Orders Military Response
In response to the attack, the Borno state government has issued directives for an immediate military operation. Nigerian troops have been ordered to pursue and neutralize the assailants, believed to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). The government has pledged to intensify efforts to safeguard local communities and prevent future incidents.
Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum expressed his outrage at the heinous act. He called on the officers and personnel of Operation Hadin Kai, the military task force combating insurgency in the region, to take decisive action against the militants responsible.
“Governor Zulum condemns this brutal attack in the strongest possible terms and urges the military to track and eliminate the insurgent elements operating in Dumba and other enclaves within the Lake Chad area,” a statement from the governor’s office read.
The governor also extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and reassured them that all possible measures would be taken to locate those who are still missing. “We stand in solidarity with the grieving families and assure them that efforts are underway to find and reunite survivors with their loved ones,” he added.
Lake Chad: A Region Under Siege
The Lake Chad region has long been a focal point for insurgency, with groups like ISWAP exploiting the area’s challenging geography and socio-economic vulnerabilities to establish strongholds. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant loss of life, displacement of communities, and a growing humanitarian crisis.
Farmers in this region often find themselves on the front lines of the conflict, as they attempt to cultivate land that is increasingly unsafe. The attack in Dumba serves as yet another grim reminder of the urgent need for enhanced security measures and sustained military action to address the root causes of extremism and protect vulnerable populations.
Despite efforts by the Nigerian government and its international partners to stabilize the region, the insurgency remains resilient, threatening livelihoods and development in northeastern Nigeria. The government’s latest response emphasizes a commitment to restoring security and rebuilding the trust of affected communities.
As investigations into the incident continue, the people of Borno and the surrounding areas remain hopeful for lasting peace and an end to the cycle of violence that has plagued their lives for over a decade.
