The Sudanese Armed Forces, with the support of allied groups, have achieved a significant military victory by retaking control of Wad Madani, the capital city of Al-Jazira state in central Sudan, from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This milestone marks a turning point in the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group, which had held the city under its control for more than a year.
The announcement was made by Khalid Al-Aiser, Sudan’s Minister of Culture and Information and government spokesperson, who confirmed that the army is now working diligently to eliminate any remaining RSF resistance within the city. “Our forces are currently working on clearing the remnants of the rebels inside the city,” a Sudanese Armed Forces spokesperson reiterated, underscoring the army’s determination to secure full control over the area.
Earlier in the day, the army reported inflicting heavy casualties on the RSF during the offensive to reclaim Wad Madani. This city, a key urban center in Al-Jazira state, holds strategic importance due to its location and its role as a regional hub. The victory comes after months of intense fighting and is seen as a critical step toward restoring stability in central Sudan.
The commander of the Sudanese army’s special operations in Sennar state, Fath Al-Alim Al-Shoubli, spoke to reporters about the broader objectives of the military campaign. “The army intends to continue advancing until all of Al-Jazira state and ultimately the entirety of Sudan is liberated,” he stated, emphasizing the resolve to push forward and dismantle RSF strongholds across the country.
The recapture of Wad Madani follows another recent success by the army in Al-Jazira state. On Thursday, military forces reclaimed the city of Al-Hajj Abdullah, further demonstrating the army’s ability to regain lost territories. These victories are part of a wider strategy to weaken the RSF and restore government authority across Sudan.
The conflict has left a devastating humanitarian toll in its wake. According to the United Nations, over 30 million people across Sudan require urgent humanitarian assistance due to the prolonged fighting. In Al-Jazira state and beyond, families displaced by the violence have sought shelter in makeshift camps, schools, and other temporary accommodations. Many others remain in their homes, struggling to access basic necessities.
The crisis has drawn international attention, with aid organizations warning of an unprecedented need for food, medical care, and shelter. Despite these challenges, the Sudanese Armed Forces appear resolute in their efforts to restore peace and stability.
As military operations continue, the recapture of Wad Madani signals not only a tactical victory but also a boost to the morale of the Sudanese government and its supporters. However, the road to lasting peace remains fraught with challenges, requiring sustained efforts both on the battlefield and in diplomatic channels to bring an end to the conflict.
