The Sudan Doctors Network (SDN) said on Sunday that a humanitarian volunteer died while being held in a detention facility run by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.
SDN identified the deceased as Al-Tayeb Al-Tom Mirsal, saying he had been detained after the RSF took control of El Fasher in October 2025 following months of fighting and a prolonged siege.
The group said Mirsal’s death was among several reported deaths of detainees held in undisclosed RSF detention facilities, warning of deteriorating humanitarian and health conditions among those being held.
According to the network, more than 3,000 people have been detained by the RSF in El Fasher, including at Shala Prison as well as other prisons and residential buildings reportedly converted into detention centres. It also alleged that buildings belonging to the University of Khartoum had been used as detention facilities.
The network said detainees had been unable to communicate with their families for about a year, adding that the health and humanitarian conditions of those held remained unclear.
It alleged that detention facilities were facing outbreaks of disease and a severe shortage of basic necessities, while some detainees had reportedly experienced fainting and repeated falls. The group attributed these conditions to alleged neglect, mistreatment and torture.
Also, SDN called on international and humanitarian organisations to press for information on the whereabouts and condition of detainees and demanded immediate access for medical and humanitarian teams to assess their conditions and provide essential care.
It also called for the release of civilians held arbitrarily and for those responsible for any violations against detainees to be held accountable.
The RSF’s takeover of El Fasher in October 2025 followed months of fighting and a siege that drove large numbers of civilians from the city and worsened humanitarian conditions in North Darfur.
The allegations could not be independently verified from the Sudan Tribune report.
Sudan has been engulfed in war since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, creating one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.
