Côte d’Ivoire Repatriates 135 Migrants From Niger With IOM Support

Côte d’Ivoire has repatriated 135 of its nationals from Niger, including two minors, in an operation carried out by the government with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The latest return brings to about 670 the number of Ivorian migrants who have returned to the country from Niger and North African countries since the beginning of 2026.

The operation is part of government efforts to assist Ivorians facing difficult conditions along migration routes and facilitate their voluntary return and reintegration.

Niger has long served as a key transit route for migrants from West and Central Africa travelling towards North Africa and, in some cases, Europe. The journey exposes migrants to risks including trafficking, exploitation, detention and harsh conditions in the Sahara.

The IOM supports assisted voluntary return operations across the region, helping migrants return safely to their countries of origin and providing support to help them rebuild their lives after returning.

The latest operation also highlights continued efforts by Côte d’Ivoire and international partners to address irregular migration and provide assistance to vulnerable migrants along major African migration routes.
