Ghana’s government has imposed an 11-hour daily curfew on Hamile Township and surrounding communities in the Lambussie District of the Upper West Region following a dynamite explosion that killed a Ghana Immigration Service officer and left another critically injured.
The curfew, announced by the Ministry of the Interior on Tuesday, Nov. 3, takes immediate effect and prohibits movement between 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. daily.
According to the ministry, the Interior Minister imposed the restriction on the advice of the National Security Council through an Executive Instrument as part of efforts to contain the security situation in the area.
The government has also imposed a total ban on the possession of firearms, ammunition and other offensive weapons in Hamile and neighbouring communities, warning that anyone found carrying such items would be arrested and prosecuted.
The measures follow a dynamite explosion in Hamile on Tuesday that reportedly killed one immigration officer and critically injured another.
Preliminary information from security sources indicates that civilians travelling along an unauthorised route encountered security personnel at a checkpoint before the explosion occurred.
The Ministry of the Interior has appealed to traditional leaders, opinion leaders, young people and residents to exercise restraint and refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions.
It also urged residents to address their grievances through peaceful and non-violent channels, stressing that the restrictions are intended to restore calm and maintain security in the affected communities.
