A plane carrying a senior or prominent figure crashed at Libya’s Misrata airport on Monday, according to Al Arabiya.

The report said the incident prompted the closure of airspace in the area.

The identity of the person on board has not yet been disclosed, while further details about the crash remain unclear.

The incident comes less than a year after Libyan army chief General Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad was killed in an aircraft crash in Turkey.

Libya has remained politically divided between rival administrations and armed groups since the 2011 uprising that ended Muammar Gaddafi’s rule. Misrata, one of the country’s largest cities, is a major economic and military centre in western Libya and has played a significant role in the country’s post-2011 political landscape.
