Egypt’s law enforcement forces have detained 136 foreign nationals and 87 Egyptian citizens during an expansive security operation in the Southern Military Region targeting transnational smuggling and illegal gold mining networks, the military spokesperson said on Monday.

The operation, conducted in coordination with the Egyptian Ministry of Interior, targeted criminal hubs used by trafficking rings to conduct unlicensed mineral extraction, weapons and drug smuggling, and undocumented migration near the country’s southern frontiers, according to an official military statement.

Security units confiscated 14 transport vehicles, wireless communication devices, and substantial sums of cash in both Egyptian pounds (EGP) and foreign currencies. In addition, authorities seized large quantities of unlicensed weapons, ammunition, and industrial machinery utilized for unauthorized artisanal gold extraction.

The military statement indicated that the operation aims to eliminate direct threats to national security, safeguard economic assets, and protect the domestic investment climate from cross-border criminal activity. A number of undocumented border crossers surrendered to security checkpoints during the deployment and were subsequently deported to their home nations, with officials noting that their humanitarian needs were accommodated.

All detained individuals and confiscated material assets have been transferred to competent judicial authorities for formal prosecution in line with international treaties and humanitarian law guidelines. The state maintains all available options to counter security threats and protect its territory, the statement added.

Egypt-Sudan Borders: Background & Context

The Impact of the Sudan Conflict

The 1,276-kilometre border between Egypt and Sudan has faced escalating security challenges since the outbreak of the Sudanese civil war in April 2023. The protracted conflict has forced hundreds of thousands of displaced persons to seek refuge in Egypt, putting significant socio-economic pressure on Cairo’s public infrastructure and intensifying the need for strict border enforcement.

The Geopolitics of the Informal Gold Trade

  • Unregulated Resource Extraction: The Nubian Desert region spanning southern Egypt and northern Sudan contains rich, unregulated gold deposits. Artisanal mining camps, heavily populated by local tribal networks and foreign migrants, have expanded rapidly over the last three years.
  • Cross-Border Cartels: Regional security analysts report that up to 60 per cent of Sudan’s gold output has been channelled through informal cross-border networks, undercutting official state-dictated prices and state revenues for both nations.
  • Prior Friction: The official military announcement follows reports from regional monitoring groups of recent operational friction along the frontier, including drone and artillery strikes near the Al-Ansari and Jabal al-Uqaydat mining areas. Egyptian authorities have repeatedly warned informal prospectors against encroaching on formal mining concessions managed by state-backed entities, such as the Shalateen Mineral Resources Company.
