Woldiya, Ethiopia – The Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) has reported significant territorial gains across multiple areas in and around Woldiya city in Ethiopia’s Northern Amhara region, sources told DNE Africa on Thursday. These claims suggest an intensification of the conflict between Fano and the Ethiopian federal government.

According to DNE Africa’s tally, the fierce fighting has resulted in substantial Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) casualties and captures, with Fano claiming:

  • 716 ENDF troops killed
  • 188 ENDF troops captured

In Thursday’s engagement, Fano sources reported that the commander of the ENDF’s 12th Division was wounded and managed to escape, while his deputy, both colonels, was captured.

The engagements that led to these figures reportedly took place across several battles around Woldiya city and Lalibela Town, specifically mentioning:

  • Battles around the towns of Kul Mesk, Muja, and Wondach.
  • The Muja area.
  • The Girana area.
  • The Sitayish area.
  • The Hamusit area.
  • The Ahun Tegn area.
  • The Sanka area.
  • The Qalim Area.
  • The Wuchale area.
  • The Bilibala area.

The AFNF asserts control over a large portion of the North Wollo Zone, specifically claiming to hold:

  • The entire Gidan District
  • The entire Gazo District
  • The entire Ras Angot District
  • The entire Lasta District (with the exception of Shumesha Kebele)
  • The entire Guba Lafto District (excluding Woldiya city itself)
  • The entire Dawint District
  • The entire Wadila District (with the exception of Kon city)
  • The entire Meket District (excluding Filakite and Geregera city)

An artillery battle is currently underway at the entrance to the city of Woldiya, a highly strategic location.

These latest claims follow reports from Wednesday, where the Amhara Fano National Force, specifically its Menelik Command, also reported significant territorial gains across multiple areas in Ethiopia’s North and South Wollo zones. According to DNE Africa sources at the time, approximately 471 ENDF soldiers were killed and 175 captured in those earlier engagements. These victories collectively underscore an escalating conflict between AFNF and the Ethiopian federal government.
