Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso has expressed his country’s interest in joining the BRICS group, highlighting the potential benefits of BRICS initiatives for Africa, particularly for Congo. Nguesso, in an interview with Russian media, stated that the country is ready to take its place within the expanding bloc.
The President, who participated in the 2024 BRICS meeting in Russia, noted that the group is open to including new members. He described the expansion of BRICS as an important step and confirmed Congo’s intention to join.
Nguesso is set to attend Moscow’s Victory Day parade in May, marking the 80th anniversary of World War II’s end, and hopes to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. Discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral ties, including cooperation in agriculture, law enforcement, and oil.
Congo is increasing its collaboration with Russia, particularly in the oil sector, where Russian firms are involved in exploration and production. A key project involves building an oil pipeline between Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville. Nguesso also pointed to growing partnerships in law enforcement, with Russian support for training and equipping Congo’s security forces.
