Lieutenant General Tadesse Werede has been appointed the new President of the Tigray Interim Administration (TIA), taking over from Getachew Reda. Tadesse, who has served as Deputy Head and Head of the Cabinet Secretariat for the TIA over the past two years, officially stepped into the role today.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed shared in a social media statement that the decision followed a month of consultations, considering the Ethiopian Constitution, the Pretoria Agreement, and expert advice. He expressed confidence that Tadesse, with his deep understanding of the region’s dynamics, would effectively lead Tigray toward stability, peace, and development.
The leadership change comes after extensive discussions within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which saw divisions emerge following its 14th Congress in August 2024, despite ongoing mediation efforts. PM Abiy also extended gratitude to Getachew Reda for his leadership during the critical transitional phase after the Pretoria Peace Agreement in November 2022. Getachew, who had previously been an outspoken critic of the Prime Minister, played a key role in advocating for the peace agreement’s implementation.
