Tshisekedi Reshuffles DRC Cabinet, Brings Opposition Figures into Key Roles

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi has announced a cabinet reshuffle, appointing two opposition figures to senior posts in a move seen as an effort to widen his political base and strengthen consensus ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.

The shake-up, unveiled on Friday after months of political consultations, names former prime minister Adolphe Muzito as vice prime minister in charge of the budget, and Floribert Anzuluni, leader of a minor opposition party, as minister for regional integration.

While several key figures have retained their positions, others have shifted portfolios. Prime Minister Judith Suminwa remains in her role, Eve Bazaiba moves from the environment ministry to social affairs, and Aimé Boji transitions from the budget ministry to industry.

Observers note that the changes, though not sweeping, carry political significance. Analysts say Tshisekedi may be seeking to consolidate support for his Union for Democracy and Social Progress party and foster greater unity in a deeply fragmented political landscape.

The reshuffle comes as the DRC faces persistent security threats in its eastern provinces, economic hurdles, and ongoing tensions between political factions. The inclusion of opposition figures is being interpreted as a strategic gesture aimed at building broader alliances and reducing political friction ahead of the next electoral cycle.
