Mauritania and the European Union (EU) have intensified negotiations to renew their sustainable fisheries partnership protocol ahead of its expiry on Nov. 14, as both sides seek to reach an agreement that balances their shared interests and promotes the sustainable use of marine resources.
Mauritanian Minister of Fisheries and Maritime and Port Infrastructure Aissata Lam held a video conference on Thursday with European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis to discuss key issues in the ongoing negotiations, according to Mauritania’s Ministry of Fisheries.
The two officials exchanged views on the issues under discussion and explored ways to narrow differences and strengthen mutual understanding on various aspects of their fisheries partnership, the ministry said.
They also affirmed the importance of continued dialogue and coordination to advance negotiations towards balanced outcomes that take into account the interests of both parties and strengthen cooperation in the fisheries sector.
The talks come as Mauritania and the EU work to renew the protocol underpinning their sustainable fisheries partnership before the current agreement expires on November 14.
The negotiations are significant for both sides, as the partnership governs cooperation on fishing activities and the management of marine resources. Reaching a renewed agreement before the deadline would help maintain continuity in their fisheries relationship while providing a framework for further cooperation on sustainable resource use.
