Israeli Envoy: Ethiopia’s Peaceful Push for Sea Access Is Justified & Essential
SHARE

Israel’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Abraham Negussie, has voiced his support for Ethiopia’s pursuit of sea access through peaceful and diplomatic channels, emphasizing its fundamental importance for the nation’s long-term economic development and regional stability.

In an exclusive interview with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), Ambassador Negussie underscored that Ethiopia’s push for a sustainable and secure sea outlet is both legitimate and strategically vital. As a landlocked country with Africa’s second-largest population, Ethiopia faces logistical and economic constraints that could be alleviated through access to maritime trade routes.

He acknowledged that Ethiopia’s government has consistently sought a diplomatic resolution to this issue, demonstrating its commitment to regional cooperation and peaceful negotiations. The ambassador pointed out that a country with Ethiopia’s economic ambitions and growing industrial base cannot afford to be deprived of direct access to international markets via the sea. He called on the international community to consider Ethiopia’s request within the framework of fairness and economic necessity.

Negussie further noted that sustainable access to a seaport is not just a strategic priority for Ethiopia but a prerequisite for ensuring long-term economic growth, trade facilitation, and regional integration. He highlighted that Ethiopia’s increasing industrial output, infrastructural advancements, and expanding trade networks all necessitate a more direct and cost-effective link to global shipping routes.

Addressing concerns about the regional implications of Ethiopia’s maritime aspirations, the Israeli envoy stressed that countries committed to justice and economic development should recognize Ethiopia’s legitimate need. He expressed hope that ongoing diplomatic engagements would result in a viable solution that benefits Ethiopia and the broader Horn of Africa region.

With Ethiopia’s economy continuing to grow and its trade partnerships expanding, the ambassador reiterated that access to a sustainable and secure sea route would be a game-changer for the nation. He reaffirmed Israel’s support for peaceful diplomatic efforts and encouraged all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue to find a mutually beneficial resolution.
