Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was elected the country’s first female Vice President in a groundbreaking milestone for Ghanaian politics. Her historic victory comes as part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket, led by President-elect John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 elections.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Cape Coast, Central Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has long been a trailblazer in academia and leadership. After earning her Bachelor’s degree and Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast, she pursued a Master’s and Ph.D. in English Literature at York University, Canada.

Her achievements include becoming the first woman to lead a public university in Ghana and serving as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast from 2008. During her tenure, she introduced transformative policies that enhanced infrastructure and championed gender equity in higher education.

From Education to Politics

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s transition to politics began in 2013 when she was appointed Minister for Education under John Mahama’s presidency. In this role, she spearheaded initiatives that transformed the nation’s education system, including the elimination of “schools under trees,” modernizing facilities, and providing free textbooks and uniforms.

In 2020, she made history again as the first woman to be nominated as a vice-presidential candidate by a major Ghanaian political party. Her selection underscored the NDC’s commitment to gender equality and inclusion.

A Symbol of Progress

Her election is a monumental achievement not only for Ghana but for the African continent. As Vice President-elect, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is expected to advocate for education reform, gender equality, and youth empowerment. Her leadership is anticipated to bring innovative approaches to national policy, particularly in advancing Ghana’s education sector.

This milestone is also a source of inspiration for women across Africa, symbolizing the growing momentum for female representation in political leadership.

Nationwide Celebration

The announcement of the election results sparked nationwide celebrations, with NDC supporters taking to the streets. Women across Ghana hailed the moment as a victory for all, expressing pride in Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s achievement and its affirmation of women’s leadership capabilities.

Looking to the Future

As Ghana prepares for the transition of power, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s role will be central in shaping the nation’s trajectory. Her focus on unity, education, and inclusivity promises a transformative era for Ghana.

This historic election is a triumph for the NDC and a testament to Ghana’s progress toward a more inclusive and diverse political landscape. Under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama and Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana is set to embark on a path of inspired leadership and national unity.
