The Ethiopian Federal Police have announced the introduction of drone technology to enhance traffic management, strengthen security measures, and oversee large-scale public events in Addis Ababa, the nation’s capital. This development, as reported by local media, represents a significant step in leveraging technology to address urban safety and security challenges.
A Safe City with Emerging Challenges
Addis Ababa is widely regarded as one of the safer cities in Africa, boasting relatively low rates of violent crime. However, petty crimes such as pickpocketing and mobile phone theft remain a concern, particularly in crowded and bustling areas. The deployment of drones aims to address these issues, creating a safer environment for both residents and visitors.
Strengthening Urban Security
General Demelash Gebremichael, Commissioner of the Federal Police, unveiled the initiative during a recent briefing. He explained that the use of drones will be instrumental in monitoring traffic flow, preventing crimes, and ensuring public safety during major events.
The initiative comes as Addis Ababa prepares to host key events such as the Timket (Epiphany) festival and the African Union Leaders’ Summit. “These measures are crucial to ensuring peaceful celebrations and gatherings,” General Gebremichael stated.
He also highlighted the significant strides made in urban safety through coordinated efforts by security forces. These measures include intensified patrols, community engagement, and the integration of advanced surveillance technologies.
Technological Innovation & Community Collaboration
To address specific security concerns, including vehicle theft and mobile phone snatching, the Federal Police have prioritized collaborative strategies involving joint security teams, community stakeholders, and law enforcement agencies.
According to Addis Ababa Police Commissioner Getu Argaw, these efforts have already led to a noticeable reduction in crime rates. “The combination of day-and-night surveillance, federal force collaboration, and active community participation has significantly improved the city’s security environment,” he remarked.
A Safer Future for Addis Ababa
In addition to combating petty crimes, the Federal Police have focused on dismantling organized criminal networks that pose a threat to urban stability. The implementation of drone technology is expected to further enhance their capacity to monitor activities, respond quickly to incidents, and deter criminal behavior.
As Addis Ababa continues to evolve into a modern metropolis, the Ethiopian government’s commitment to safety and innovation underscores its vision of a secure, dynamic, and thriving capital city. Residents and visitors alike can look forward to greater mobility and safety, ensuring a stable environment for business, tourism, and cultural festivities.
