Ethiopia Doubles Coffee Production, Aims for $2 Billion Revenues

Ethiopia’s coffee production has doubled in the last five years, reaching one million tonnes annually, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced.

The increase solidifies Ethiopia’s position as a major player in the global coffee market, according to a report by Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a partner of TV BRICS.

The country’s annual coffee production output has risen from 500,000 tonnes to the current one million tonnes. This growth has been achieved through the introduction of modern irrigation systems and mechanised harvesting methods, which have significantly increased productivity. Yields are now reaching up to 60 quintals per hectare.

In the fiscal year 2016, Ethiopia’s coffee sector generated over $1.4 billion in revenue. This year, the government has set an ambitious target of reaching $2 billion in revenue from coffee exports.

These developments demonstrate Ethiopia’s commitment to expanding its coffee industry and increasing its share of the global market. The substantial growth in production and the revenue targets highlight the country’s aspirations for further development within the sector.
