In a significant development in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against terrorism and insecurity, the Nigerian military has successfully neutralized 109 terrorists in a series of internal security operations conducted over the past week, according to Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defense Media Operations. The official announced during a press briefing held on Friday in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
The operations, which spanned various regions affected by terrorist activities, also resulted in the arrest of 81 individuals suspected of being involved in terrorist activities, alongside the rescue of 43 hostages who had been kidnapped by armed groups. These successes are part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to tackle the growing threat posed by terrorist groups operating within its borders.
In addition to the neutralization of the terrorists, the Nigerian armed forces managed to recover a substantial cache of weapons, ammunition, and other military equipment, further weakening the operational capabilities of these militant groups. The seized weapons are believed to have been used in various acts of violence and terrorism, including attacks on civilians and security personnel.
The military’s efforts also extended to countering illegal activities in the Niger Delta region. According to Major General Buba, security forces arrested several individuals involved in oil theft, a longstanding issue that has plagued the region for years. In the course of these operations, stolen crude oil worth approximately N618,756,470 (about $397,115) was recovered, with illegal oil refining sites destroyed. These actions are part of Nigeria’s broader push to combat environmental damage and financial losses caused by oil theft and illegal refining.
The Nigerian military’s efforts are seen as a part of a sustained campaign to secure the country from a range of threats posed by both homegrown terrorists and external groups. Over the course of 2024, the armed forces had already made significant strides in neutralizing terrorist threats, with a total of 10,937 terrorists reported eliminated.
Despite these successes, Nigeria continues to face significant challenges. Terrorist groups such as Boko Haram, which has been operating in the country for over a decade, continue to carry out criminal activities, including kidnappings for ransom and attacks on military and civilian targets. The persistent violence in northern and central Nigeria, as well as the criminal activities in the Niger Delta, underscores the complexity of the country’s security challenges.
In response to these persistent threats, the Nigerian government remains committed to strengthening its military and security infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of coordination between various security agencies and local communities in addressing the root causes of insurgency and criminal activities.
