Ethiopia Reaffirms Its Pan-African Commitment Ahead of AU Summit

Ethiopia is set to host the highly anticipated 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) on February 15-16, 2025, alongside the 46th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council from February 12-13. As the host country, Ethiopia’s preparations are well underway, with an unwavering commitment to the values of Pan-Africanism and the goals of the African Union.

Ambassador Muktar Mohamed Ware, Ethiopia’s representative to Algeria, recently highlighted the country’s dedication to these Pan-African ideals in an interview with POA. He underscored that Ethiopia’s role as the host nation underscores its historical and ongoing support for the African Union’s mission of fostering unity and development across the continent. Ethiopia, particularly Addis Ababa, the seat of the AU’s headquarters, has become a focal point for diplomatic activities throughout Africa. The city has witnessed significant infrastructural upgrades aimed at enhancing its appeal as a global venue for international events.

Ambassador Muktar pointed out that these infrastructural developments are not only a testament to Ethiopia’s commitment to Pan-Africanism but also an indication of its longstanding tradition of diplomatic leadership. The country’s preparations for the summit serve as a reflection of its historical legacy as a center for African diplomacy. Ethiopia has long played a pivotal role in supporting the independence movements of African nations, and these efforts continue to be recognized across the continent. The summit, he said, provides Ethiopia an opportunity to showcase its ongoing efforts to foster collaboration and progress on the African continent.

A particularly noteworthy element of these preparations is the strategic work led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other national leaders, aimed at transforming Addis Ababa into a world-class venue for international gatherings. The city’s upgrades are designed to enhance Ethiopia’s diplomatic capacity and ensure that it remains a reliable and prestigious host for important continental and global events.

Ambassador Muktar expressed confidence in the success of the upcoming summit and reiterated the importance of Ethiopia’s role in Pan-African diplomacy. He emphasized that the summit is not just a ceremonial gathering but a symbolic representation of Ethiopia’s continued dedication to fostering collaboration, unity, and progress across the continent. The upcoming event reflects Ethiopia’s deep commitment to the African Union’s mission and its ongoing efforts to strengthen Africa’s political and economic integration.

The ambassador also noted that Ethiopia’s role as the diplomatic capital of Africa is a responsibility shared by generations of Ethiopians, both past and present. The country has long been recognized for its leadership in African diplomacy, and this summit is another important moment in its commitment to the goals of Pan-Africanism. As preparations continue, Ethiopia’s dedication to these principles remains steadfast, further cementing its legacy as a leader in the fight for a united and prosperous Africa.

Ethiopia’s hosting of the upcoming AU summit reflects its unwavering commitment to the African Union’s ideals of peace, unity, and development. The country’s ongoing infrastructure development and diplomatic efforts serve as evidence of its dedication to Pan-Africanism. Ethiopia looks forward to welcoming African leaders and international participants to Addis Ababa, and it is poised to continue its influential role in shaping Africa’s future.
