Benin Summons Niger's Charge d'Affaires Over Terrorism Accusations

Tensions between Benin and Niger have escalated following recent accusations by Niger’s leader Abdourahamane Tchiani, who claimed that Benin is providing support to terrorist groups. In response, Benin’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Niger’s Charge d’Affaires to the country to address these “unfounded” allegations.

The dispute arises from a broader context of strained relations between the two countries, particularly since the July 2023 coup in Niger. Benin condemned the coup and has actively supported the economic sanctions imposed on Niger by the international community.

Diplomatic Rejection and Commitment to Dialogue

In its formal response, Benin’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that despite the gravity of the accusations, the country remains committed to maintaining diplomatic dialogue and fostering fraternal cooperation with Niger. Foreign Minister Olushegun Adjadi Bakari expressed strong disapproval of Tchiani’s statements, which alleged that Benin had provided drones to terrorist groups operating in vulnerable areas.

According to diplomatic sources, Minister Bakari delivered a formal protest letter to Niger’s Foreign Ministry, rejecting the accusations in the strongest terms. In a related move, the Beninese authorities met with Niger’s envoy, signaling their intention to address the issue through direct diplomatic channels.

Accusations of Terrorism Support

Tchiani’s accusations extend beyond Benin to include France, with both nations being accused of facilitating terrorism in the Sahel region. Specifically, Tchiani alleged that Benin’s support included the provision of drones to armed groups operating in Niger’s vulnerable regions. These claims have added fuel to the ongoing tensions, as both countries deny any involvement in supporting terrorism.

As the diplomatic standoff continues, the international community is closely watching the unfolding situation in the Sahel, where the threat of terrorism remains a serious challenge to regional stability. Benin’s call for open dialogue suggests a potential pathway to defuse tensions, though the accusations against the country have further complicated its relations with Niger.
