The South African rand was little changed against the US dollar early on Tuesday as investors awaited domestic economic data and the US Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate decision for fresh signals on the currency’s outlook.
At 0632 GMT, the rand traded at 16.6525 per dollar, broadly unchanged from its previous close.
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is scheduled to release the country’s leading business cycle indicator for August at 0700 GMT. The indicator incorporates several economic measures, including vehicle sales, business confidence and money supply, offering insights into the country’s economic momentum.
Global monetary policy also remains in focus, with markets awaiting the Federal Reserve’s policy decision on Wednesday for guidance on the future direction of US interest rates.
According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders were pricing in an approximately 11% probability of a US rate hike this week and an 82% chance of an increase in December.
The rand, like other currencies sensitive to global risk sentiment, is influenced by international developments, particularly changes in US monetary policy, as well as domestic economic indicators.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s benchmark government bond maturing in 2035 was also steady in early trading, with its yield at 8.62%.
