The Federal Republic of Somalia has strongly condemned and demanded the immediate reversal of a recent announcement by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs to appoint a diplomatic representative to the breakaway region of Somaliland, describing the move as a blatant violation of its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
The Somali federal government stated that the action explicitly contradicts international law, including the United Nations Charter and the founding principles of the African Union, the Arab League, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which affirm Somalia is a single, indivisible sovereign state within its internationally recognised borders.
Categorically rejecting any attempt to grant diplomatic or political recognition to any part of its territory outside state authority, the government affirmed that the northwestern region, which it referred to as the “so-called Somaliland,” remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Any endeavours to portray the region as a separate entity lack any legal basis and undermine established international consensus, the statement said.
Somalia warned that such moves would destabilise regional stability and encourage divisive narratives. The government noted this would undermine international efforts aimed at achieving security and stability in the region, at a time when Somalia continues to work with international partners to strengthen state institutions, consolidate good governance, advance national reconciliation efforts, and combat terrorism.
Referring to Israel as an “occupying authority,” Somalia called on the Israeli government to fully commit to respecting Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence.
The government also urged the African Union, the United Nations, the Arab League, the OIC, the European Union, and the wider international community to uphold international law and reject any actions aimed at undermining Somalia’s unity or legitimising separatist tendencies.
The Federal Republic of Somalia affirmed its steadfast commitment to protecting its national unity and safeguarding its sovereign rights through all available diplomatic, political, and legal means in accordance with the provisions of international law.
