A Malian social media activist known for praising the national army on TikTok was abducted and publicly executed by gunmen in the northern town of Tonka, according to state media and local sources.

The victim, identified as Mariam Sissè, had built a following of nearly 100,000 users on TikTok, where she frequently posted videos supporting Malian soldiers and urging citizens to stand behind the army amid the country’s ongoing conflict with jihadist groups.

Malian state television reported that Sissè was kidnapped on Thursday and later shot dead in a public square, an act meant to intimidate pro-government voices in regions contested by militants.

Conflicting Accounts, Widespread Fear

Two local sources — one who spoke with witnesses at the scene and another close to the victim’s family — confirmed her abduction, though neither saw the execution firsthand. “Mariam was taken by force from the marketplace in broad daylight,” one resident said.

Accounts differ on the exact timing of her killing, with some reports indicating it occurred on Friday, while others — including state TV — said it took place on Saturday.

No group has claimed responsibility, but local officials suspect members of Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked coalition active across northern and central Mali.

A Symbolic Target

In its report, Malian state television described Sissè as “a young woman who sought only to support her community and encourage the army in its mission to protect citizens and their property.” Analysts say her execution underscores the increasing risks faced by civilians who express support for government forces online.

The incident has sparked outrage among Malians on social media, where many users have shared her past videos in tribute, describing her as “a symbol of courage.”

Escalating Conflict and Economic Strain

The killing comes as Mali faces growing pressure from jihadist insurgents who have tightened blockades on key transport routes, choking fuel supplies and pushing the capital, Bamako, into a second month of severe shortages.

At least 100 fuel trucks have been destroyed since September, and several civilians and drivers have been killed or abducted. The government has vowed to continue military operations and restore order, but residents say insecurity and economic hardship are worsening.

Observers warn that the brazen public execution of a popular figure could signal an escalation in extremist tactics — a direct challenge to the military-led government’s narrative of regaining control.

“Mariam’s killing shows that despite the government’s confidence, armed groups still hold sway in parts of the north,” said a regional analyst based in Bamako.

With the conflict grinding on and public trust under strain, Mali’s leadership faces mounting pressure to prove it can protect both its citizens and its supporters.
