Trump Interrupts Mauritanian President, Stuns African Leaders with Offhand Remarks

In a series of unscripted moments during a working lunch with five African heads of state, U.S. President Donald Trump raised eyebrows by interrupting Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani mid-speech, demanding another guest identify himself, and expressing surprise at Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai’s fluency in English.

The meeting, held Wednesday at the White House and billed as a strategic dialogue on trade and security, veered into uncomfortable territory as Trump cut off President Ghazouani during his remarks on Mauritania’s strategic location and investment potential. After the Mauritanian leader spoke for about seven minutes, Trump appeared visibly impatient, gesturing for him to wrap up. Ghazouani, noticing Trump’s gestures, remarked, “I don’t want to take too much time,” only for Trump to interrupt him with, “Maybe we should speed things up—we have a tight schedule.”

Moments later, Trump turned to Bissau-Guinean President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and, seemingly forgetting who he was, asked him to “state your name and your country.”

The American president’s remarks triggered online backlash and reignited criticism over his undiplomatic conduct, a pattern noted during previous international engagements.

One of the more awkward exchanges came during a brief conversation with Liberian President Joseph Boakai. After hearing Boakai speak fluent English, Trump appeared surprised and asked, “Did you learn that in Liberia?” Boakai, visibly trying to suppress laughter, replied politely, “Yes, sir.” Trump continued praising the Liberian leader’s command of English, saying, “That’s impressive. I have people around this table who don’t speak it as well as you do.”

Observers were quick to point out that English is Liberia’s official language and widely spoken across the country, which was founded in 1822 by freed American slaves.

The lunch, which brought together the presidents of Mauritania, Liberia, Senegal, Gabon, and Guinea-Bissau, was intended to focus on trade opportunities and regional peace and security. However, the event’s tone was overshadowed by Trump’s signature off-the-cuff remarks, which once again drew attention for all the wrong reasons.
