Ethiopia and Uganda have signed eight bilateral agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors, following the conclusion of the fourth session of the Ethiopia-Uganda Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) in Addis Ababa.
The accords encompass collaboration in aviation, energy, agriculture, water resources, and trade, reflecting a mutual commitment to deepening ties after a six-year hiatus since the last JMC session.
Uganda’s delegation was led by Foreign Affairs Minister Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, accompanied by ministers including Francis Mwebesa (Trade), Fred Byamukama (Transport), Bwino Kyakulaga (Agriculture), and Gen. David Muhoozi (Internal Affairs). Ethiopia’s delegation was headed by Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Gedion Timothewos, alongside Dr. Kassahun Gofe (Trade and Regional Integration) and other senior officials.
Dr. Timothewos emphasized the importance of the agreements in enhancing parliamentary engagement, developing the Nile River Basin, and collaborating on security, counter-terrorism, and combating illegal migration.
Gen. Odongo highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two nations, noting that the JMC provides a platform to explore and agree upon a long-term vision for cooperation.
The JMC sessions, established in 2011, are intended to be held biennially on a rotational basis. The third session took place in Kampala in 2019, and the recent meeting marks a resumption of this dialogue following delays attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The signed agreements are expected to pave the way for enhanced economic partnerships and peace initiatives, contributing to regional stability and development.
