Nigeria has received its first consignment of Belarusian agricultural machinery, including 2,000 tractors and over 9,000 pieces of farming equipment, as part of a broader agricultural cooperation agreement between the two nations, Nigerian officials announced.

The shipment, delivered under a supply deal signed in September 2024, marks a key step in Nigeria’s efforts to modernize its agricultural sector. Nigerian Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, confirmed the arrival, stating that the partnership with Belarus will enhance mechanized farming, boost food production, and improve overall agricultural efficiency.

Belarus, a leading global producer of agricultural machinery, has been strengthening trade relations with African nations, offering advanced technology to support food security initiatives. The deal follows Kyari’s official visit to Minsk in June 2024, where both countries signed a five-year action plan (2024-2029) focusing on agricultural development, food supply, and technology transfer.

The plan aims to provide Nigerian farmers with access to modern farming tools, increase crop yields, and enhance food production capacity. In addition to machinery, the agreement includes provisions for training programs led by Belarusian agricultural experts to equip Nigerian farmers with skills in mechanized farming techniques.

With agriculture accounting for a significant portion of Nigeria’s economy, the government has prioritized mechanization to reduce post-harvest losses and increase productivity. The introduction of Belarusian machinery is expected to drive growth in key sectors such as grain production, irrigation farming, and agro-processing.

Officials from both nations have expressed optimism that this collaboration will lead to further trade opportunities, with Belarus also exploring avenues to export fertilizers and other agricultural inputs to Nigeria.
