Tanzania Unveils NaPA Mobile App to Boost Transport Efficiency & Security
SHARE

Tanzania has introduced a new mobile application for its National Physical Addressing System (NaPA), aiming to improve transportation services and strengthen public security. The initiative forms part of the government’s comprehensive National Digital Economy Strategy (2024-2034), which focuses on promoting digital literacy, ensuring inclusivity, and adopting international technology standards.

At the launch event, Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology Jerry Silaa highlighted the transformative potential of the system. “The NaPA system is a game-changer for our transport sector. It will help drivers locate passengers with pinpoint accuracy, reducing travel time and enhancing security,” Silaa stated.

The NaPA app uses advanced geolocation technology to simplify ride-hailing operations. By allowing passengers to input precise addresses, it ensures faster and more efficient navigation, particularly in areas lacking formal address structures. This innovation addresses long-standing challenges in Tanzania’s transport sector, such as delays caused by poor directions and location errors.

Security has also been prioritized in the system design. The app logs ride transactions, providing a digital record that can deter fraud, assist in tracking lost items, and help prevent incidents of theft or misconduct involving passengers or drivers.

The launch aligns with Tanzania’s broader digital transformation goals, which span sectors such as governance, finance, healthcare, and agriculture. The government hopes NaPA will lay the groundwork for further digital innovations that can improve service delivery across the country.

Minister Silaa called on digital entrepreneurs to explore the system’s potential. “This is a platform for innovators to develop new solutions that make life easier for Tanzanians and contribute to our digital economy’s growth,” he urged.

With this development, Tanzania reinforces its commitment to technological advancement as a driving force for national progress. By fostering innovation and embracing cutting-edge solutions, the government aims to position the country as a leader in digital transformation across East Africa.
