US, Nigeria Advance Security Cooperation with Planned Acquisition of 12 Viper Helicopters

The United States and Nigeria are advancing their security partnership, with Nigeria’s planned acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters expected to bolster the country’s defence capabilities and support joint efforts to address evolving security threats.

The US Mission in Nigeria highlighted the development in a post on its official X account on Tuesday, describing the planned acquisition as part of broader security cooperation between Washington and Abuja.

“U.S.-Nigeria security cooperation continues to advance our shared efforts to strengthen regional security,” the mission said.

It added that the planned acquisition of the 12 AH-1Z Viper helicopters underscored the two countries’ commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s defence capabilities and jointly addressing current and emerging threats.

The US Mission also reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to its security partnership with Nigeria, particularly in support of regional peace and stability.

US-Nigeria security cooperation covers several areas, including counterterrorism, maritime and border security, military professionalisation, and defence trade. Washington has previously described Nigeria as an important security partner in Africa.

In April 2022, the US State Department approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Nigeria involving 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters and associated equipment, with an estimated value of $997 million.

The proposed package included 28 T700-GE-401C engines, 2,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System guidance sections, logistics support, training, and other related equipment.

At the time, the US government said the proposed sale would enhance Nigeria’s ability to contribute to shared security objectives, promote regional stability, and improve interoperability with US and other Western forces.

The helicopter deal followed earlier US defence support to Nigeria, including the 2017 sale of 12 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft for approximately $497 million.

According to the US State Department, Nigeria made its first payment for the 12 AH-1Z helicopters in August 2023.

The planned acquisition comes as Nigeria continues to strengthen its military capabilities amid persistent security challenges, including counterterrorism operations and threats affecting several parts of the country.
