In a recent exclusive interview with the Ethiopian News Agency, Naomi Fellows, the Acting Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Addis Ababa, emphasized that the United States views its relationship with Ethiopia as one of the most critical areas of focus in Africa, due to the country’s pivotal role in ensuring the security and stability of the region.

Fellows explained that Ethiopia’s strategic importance lies not only in its geographic location, large population, and growing economy within the Horn of Africa but also for the broader African continent. “Ethiopia is central because of its long diplomatic history in the region, its contributions to the fight against terrorism, and its efforts to maintain regional stability,” she said.

She further underscored the significant role Ethiopia plays in Africa’s peace and development. “As a country, Ethiopia contributes a great deal to the African continent. We consider it a vital partner in our work, not only in the Horn of Africa but across Africa. Therefore, it is crucial for us that Ethiopia remains prosperous, secure, peaceful, and stable.”

The Acting Deputy Chief of Mission elaborated on the United States’ active collaboration with Ethiopia across a range of sectors, including education, health, humanitarian assistance, and various economic, social, and cultural areas. “Our partnerships with Ethiopia are not limited to diplomatic efforts in the Horn of Africa. We also focus on supporting Ethiopia’s economic security and strengthening its position, which is why we have supported the IMF-World Bank agreement and the associated macroeconomic reforms,” Fellows explained.

She also recognized Ethiopia’s growing investment potential and noted the presence of several American businesses operating in the country. Fellows highlighted the longstanding relationship between Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines, specifically in industrial and technical development for the growth of Ethiopia’s aviation sector.

Fellows concluded by reaffirming the United States’ commitment to working alongside Ethiopia to ensure peace and stability throughout Africa. “Ethiopia’s role in regional security and stability is absolutely central—not just geographically, but also due to its long-standing diplomatic and military contributions in the fight against terrorism and instability. It is a partner we cannot afford to work without in addressing these critical issues.”
