KAMPALA, Uganda – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala to discuss security, economic cooperation and counterterrorism efforts.
The Somali President arrived in Uganda on Friday for an official visit focused on strengthening regional cooperation, particularly in counterterrorism.
The meeting is expected to enhance intelligence sharing, joint military operations and capacity-building initiatives aimed at combating terrorism.
He will later travel to Dar es Salaam for a regional summit on the DR Congo conflict.
Somalia has been grappling with the threat posed by Al-Shabaab, a militant group with ties to Al-Qaeda. Collaboration with neighbouring countries like Uganda is crucial in addressing this challenge.
Uganda has played a significant role in supporting Somalia’s security and stabilisation efforts as a key contributor to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the new AU Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The visit underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement in fostering regional stability and addressing shared security concerns. The meeting could pave the way for more robust bilateral ties, not only in security but also in areas such as trade, development and humanitarian assistance.
