In a statement on the occasion of South Africa’s Freedom Day, Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to deepening its partnership with South Africa to bolster international security. Celebrated annually on April 27, Freedom Day marks the end of apartheid and the country’s first democratic elections held in 1994.
In his congratulatory message to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Putin highlighted the strong ties between the two nations, citing their collaborative efforts during the BRICS summit in Kazan last year as a clear example of their high-level relations. “Relations between our countries are at a high level – this was fully proven by our joint work during last year’s BRICS summit in Kazan,” the Russian President remarked.
The partnership between Russia and South Africa within the BRICS framework, according to Valentina Matvienko, the speaker of the upper house of the Russian parliament, will continue to strengthen the bilateral relationship. Matvienko also emphasized South Africa’s role as a long-time ally and a reliable partner for Russia on the African continent.
Russia’s strategic engagement with South Africa is seen as a crucial element in reinforcing security and economic cooperation, with both nations focusing on enhancing their collaborative efforts within international organizations. As both countries continue to deepen their ties, the partnership is expected to play an increasingly significant role in addressing global security challenges.
