M23 rebels have taken control of the strategically important village of Katale in the Masisi district of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after intense fighting with government forces. The capture of Katale provides the rebels with a direct route to Masisi, the district’s administrative center, raising concerns about escalating violence in the region.
Congolese military units, supported by pro-government militias, attempted to defend the village but were forced to withdraw after sustained fighting. The number of casualties remains unknown.
This latest offensive breaks a temporary period of peace in the Masisi district and marks a resumption of fighting despite a ceasefire agreement between the government and the M23 group that had been in place since last August.
The eastern DRC has been plagued by persistent insecurity caused by various armed groups, particularly M23, resulting in large-scale displacement of civilians. According to the UN’s humanitarian agency, OCHA, millions of people have been forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing conflict.
The escalation comes as the United Nations extended the MONUSCO peacekeeping mission until December 2025, citing the deteriorating security situation in the region. Despite the presence of nearly 11,000 peacekeepers, the eastern DRC remains a hotspot for violence and instability.
