Yohannes Alemayehu, a prominent leader of the Fano militia in Gojjam, Ethiopia, has been confirmed dead after being killed in action during a battle in Washera. He was the spokesperson for the Gojjam Fano and also served as the chairperson of the Amhara Fano Second Teferra division.

The news was confirmed by Gojjam Fano through social media, with Fano Asres Mare paying tribute to Yohannes, describing him as a “brave-hearted” leader who fought relentlessly to protect the Amhara people from what was seen as an existential threat. Yohannes met his end in a confrontation with enemy forces on the night of January 20-21, near Washera.

Before his death, Yohannes participated in several key battles across Gojjam, including in Mota, Adet, Milachber, Feres Bet, and Quarit. His dedication to the cause and his role as a prominent figure in the region’s struggle against external threats earned him deep respect from his comrades.

Born in Gonje Kolela, Gojjam, Yohannes Alemayehu had a distinguished academic background, having been a top student at Bahir Dar University. He was actively involved in the Amhara Students Association during his time at university, where he took on leadership roles and worked tirelessly for the betterment of his community.

Fano Asres Mare described Yohannes as a role model and a symbol of dedication and courage. While the statement did not mention funeral arrangements, it did indicate plans to hold an event in his honor. The Fano leadership also expressed their condolences to his family and friends.

Reports continue to indicate heavy fighting in the Gojjam area, including near Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara region. The Ethiopian government has reportedly deployed over 200,000 troops to the region since August 2023, and the conflict remains ongoing. The tragic loss of Yohannes Alemayehu adds to the growing toll of this war, as the Amhara region continues to experience intense violence and instability.
