Deadly Ambush in Sululta: Police Commander Killed, Party Leader Injured

Deadly Ambush in Sululta: Police Commander Killed, Party Leader Injured

In a tragic escalation of violence, Sululta district police commander Legesse Seyoum was killed on Tuesday morning in an ambush that also claimed the lives of his security team. The attack occurred in Rob Gebeya, a small town in the North Shewa Zone of Oromia, just 54 kilometers north of Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. Sisay Beshada, head of the Prosperity Party (PP) in the district, sustained injuries during the assault and was rushed to the hospital. Authorities have not provided specific details about his condition.

A Coordinated Attack in a Volatile Region

The ambush, reportedly orchestrated by a faction of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), marks yet another violent episode in Oromia, a region plagued by unrest and insurgency. The OLA has since claimed responsibility for the attack, describing it as a “surgical operation” targeting key government figures.

Eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports suggest that Commander Seyoum and his convoy were traveling in a patrol vehicle when armed assailants ambushed them. Members of the Oromia Police and the Ethiopian Defense Forces (ENDF) who accompanied him were also killed in the attack.

In a statement shared on social media, the OLA detailed the operation, stating that its Central Command had neutralized the police commander’s vehicle, eliminating him and his security detail. The group also accused Seyoum and Beshada of spearheading military campaigns against the OLA and orchestrating operations that targeted Oromo civilians.
