US Imposes Sanctions on Sudan’s RSF for Genocide During Civil War

The United States has imposed sanctions on Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for committing genocide during the ongoing civil war in the country. This marks a significant escalation in the U.S. response to the atrocities that have unfolded over the past year, following the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in April 2023. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the RSF’s actions, which he described as systematic and deliberate attempts to exterminate specific ethnic groups, echoing the genocide that took place in Darfur in the early 2000s.

The ongoing conflict has devastated Sudan, with the RSF, a paramilitary group, playing a major role in the violence. Alongside the Sudanese military, the RSF has been accused of committing widespread atrocities, including mass killings, sexual violence, and ethnic cleansing, especially targeting civilians in Darfur and other regions. According to U.S. officials, the RSF’s actions have escalated into what can only be described as genocide, as they have systematically targeted men, women, boys, and even infants based on their ethnic identity. The forces have also been accused of using rape as a weapon of war, systematically targeting women and girls from specific ethnic groups.

The RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemetti, has carried out these acts of terror with impunity, aided by local militias. The U.S. sanctions specifically target Hemetti and his role in orchestrating these attacks. The U.S. government has imposed travel restrictions on Hemetti and his family, barring them from entering the U.S. as part of a broader effort to hold those responsible for the atrocities accountable. The sanctions are aimed at both punishing the perpetrators and sending a strong message to the international community that such actions will not be tolerated.

In his statement, Blinken emphasized that the U.S. government’s actions should not be misconstrued as support for either side of the conflict. While the sanctions focus on the RSF, Blinken made it clear that both the RSF and the Sudanese military, which is also responsible for numerous human rights violations, must be held accountable for their role in the conflict. Both sides are implicated in crimes against humanity, and neither holds the legitimacy required to lead Sudan toward peace and stability in the future.

The U.S. has been increasingly vocal about its condemnation of the violence in Sudan. In addition to the sanctions against Hemetti, the U.S. government has also issued statements condemning the RSF for blocking access to humanitarian aid, exacerbating the already dire conditions in the country. The RSF has been accused of preventing civilians from accessing life-saving assistance, particularly those who have fled the violence in search of safety. This has contributed to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, with millions of people displaced and in urgent need of aid.

The U.S. sanctions are part of a broader international effort to pressure the Sudanese government and military factions to cease their violence and engage in peace talks. However, the situation remains dire, with no end in sight to the conflict. The U.S. has made it clear that it will continue to assess the situation and may impose further sanctions on individuals and entities that perpetuate the violence or obstruct efforts to bring about peace.

Blinken also reaffirmed that the U.S. remains committed to supporting the Sudanese people, particularly the millions of civilians affected by the conflict. In addition to the sanctions, the U.S. has continued to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need, working with international organizations to deliver aid to those caught in the crossfire of the war. The U.S. government has pledged to continue its efforts to support the Sudanese people as they seek a peaceful and democratic future.

As the conflict in Sudan continues to unfold, the international community remains focused on finding ways to end the violence and hold those responsible accountable. The U.S. sanctions against the RSF are just one part of a broader strategy to bring peace and stability to Sudan, but much more needs to be done to address the root causes of the conflict and prevent further atrocities from occurring. The U.S. has made it clear that it will not tolerate the continued abuse of human rights in Sudan and will take all necessary steps to ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes are brought to justice.

Moving forward, the U.S. has pledged to work closely with international partners to support peace efforts in Sudan and ensure that those responsible for the violence are held accountable. The U.S. government will continue to monitor the situation and take additional measures as needed to bring an end to the conflict and ensure the protection of human rights in Sudan.
