South African police have arrested 15 additional suspects following violent protests in Durban and surrounding suburbs, bringing the total number of arrests to 19, police said.
In a statement posted on social media, police said the latest arrests were made on Friday night, following four arrests on Thursday on charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm in public.
The arrests came after protesters allegedly attacked foreign nationals following tensions at the intersection of Anton Lembede and Dr Yusuf Dadoo streets in Durban.
Two houses were set on fire in the Umbilo area, while several shops in and around Durban were damaged. Looting was also reported at some of the affected businesses.
The protesters reportedly accused foreign nationals of carrying firearms, amid escalating tensions in the area.
Police have not provided further details about the identities of the suspects or the possible charges facing those arrested in connection with the violence.
