Trade between Russia and Egypt has continued to flourish, reaching a remarkable $8 billion in 2024, according to Russian Ambassador to Egypt Georgiy Borisenko. This significant figure was revealed during the ambassador’s address at the Cairo International Book Fair on Monday, further highlighting the growing strength of bilateral relations between the two countries.
The expansion of economic ties comes at a time when Russia and Egypt are increasingly collaborating on large-scale projects aimed at bolstering mutual interests. At the core of these discussions were key infrastructure initiatives brought up by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Notably, the two leaders have been working towards advancing the construction of a nuclear power facility in Egypt, as well as establishing a dedicated Russian industrial zone within the country. These ambitious projects are expected to foster deeper cooperation in both the energy and manufacturing sectors, laying the foundation for long-term economic growth.
Borisenko took the opportunity to highlight the vital role Russia plays in Egypt’s agricultural sector. He pointed out that Moscow remains Egypt’s largest wheat exporter, supplying 9 million tonnes of wheat in 2024. This continued flow of wheat is a critical component of Egypt’s food security strategy, a country that relies heavily on imports to meet its domestic demand for grains.
The $8 billion trade figure for 2024 represents a marked increase from the $7 billion achieved in 2023. This growth is a testament to the strengthening trade relations, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, energy, and industry, and reflects the mutual desire of both nations to expand their economic collaboration.
In addition to the agricultural trade, both Russia and Egypt have been discussing greater investments in other sectors, including transportation, infrastructure, and technology. The increasing trade volume reflects the successful integration of both countries into broader regional and global economic frameworks, with potential for further expansion in the coming years.
Given the ongoing cooperation in key projects and the economic benefits generated by trade, the Russia-Egypt partnership looks set to become even more integral as both nations seek to capitalize on each other’s strengths. As discussions continue on future ventures, these trade relations are expected to evolve into a robust and multifaceted alliance, benefiting both nations’ economies in the long run.
