Qatar Airways Expands Strategic Foothold in Africa Through New Deals and Airport Investments

Qatar Airways is intensifying its presence across Africa with a series of high-profile investments and partnerships that reflect its ambition to become a key player in the continent’s aviation future.

Most recently, the airline signed a new strategic partnership agreement with Kenya Airways, paving the way for increased cooperation and connectivity. As part of the deal, Qatar Airways will introduce a third daily flight between Doha and Nairobi, enhancing access between East Africa and the Gulf while supporting tourism, trade, and business links.

In Rwanda, Qatar Airways already holds a 60% stake in RwandAir and is co-financing the development of the $2 billion Bugesera International Airport, a project expected to transform Kigali into a regional air travel hub. The new airport is projected to open in 2027 and handle up to 14 million passengers annually by 2032.

The airline’s investment strategy also extends to Southern Africa, where it owns a 25% stake in South Africa’s regional carrier, Airlink. This partnership provides access to over 45 destinations across the region, further strengthening Qatar Airways’ continental reach.

As global aviation shifts toward emerging markets, Qatar Airways’ deepening engagement in Africa underscores its long-term commitment to the continent—not only as a passenger market but also as a key partner in infrastructure development and regional integration.
