Mauritius, Seychelles Top Africa in Global Capitalism Index

Mauritius and Seychelles rank among Africa’s strongest market economies, according to a new global index assessing the institutions and conditions that support capitalism.

Mauritius ranked 48th worldwide, followed by Seychelles in 50th place and Botswana in 52nd, in the Global Capitalism Index, which covers 161 countries.

Namibia ranked 59th, Cape Verde 66th, Rwanda 74th and Morocco 85th, placing them among the continent’s highest-ranked economies.

Switzerland topped the global ranking, followed by the United States and Hong Kong.

The index assesses the extent to which economic systems allow capital to move and markets to operate with limited restrictions. It examines factors including banking, market competition and the movement of goods and capital.

The ranking focuses on the institutional conditions underpinning market activity rather than measuring economic output or living standards directly. A high position therefore does not necessarily indicate higher incomes or faster economic growth.

The results highlight differences in the market frameworks of African economies, where the regulatory environment, access to finance and competition can influence business activity and investment.
