Egypt has maintained its position as Africa’s fastest fixed internet market for the fifth consecutive year, winning Ookla’s Speedtest Award for the continent’s fastest fixed broadband performance in the first half of 2026.
The award was announced on the sidelines of Network X 2026, held in Vienna, Austria, from October 13 to 15, according to Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA).
The recognition was based on actual user-initiated measurements collected through Ookla’s Speedtest platform during the first and second quarters of 2026. The results showed that Egypt outperformed other African countries in overall fixed broadband performance.
The achievement comes amid efforts to upgrade Egypt’s digital infrastructure, expand fibre-optic networks and improve the efficiency of telecommunications services to accommodate growing demand for internet connectivity and data services.
The NTRA has been working with telecommunications operators and service providers to monitor network performance, encourage infrastructure investment and improve service quality.
In his remarks, Mohamed Shamroukh, chief executive of the NTRA, said the award reflected progress in developing fixed internet networks and strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure. He added that the recognition would encourage further investment and continued improvements in service quality.
The award was received on behalf of Communications and Information Technology Minister Raafat Hendy by an Egyptian delegation attending the Vienna conference, including Shamroukh and officials from the ministry and the NTRA.
The recognition reinforces Egypt’s position in Africa’s fixed broadband market as the country continues to pursue its digital transformation objectives and expand high-speed connectivity.
