A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday in Nzérékoré, southeastern Guinea, where violent clashes erupted between fans during a football match, leaving at least dozens of people dead. Medical sources confirmed the staggering death toll, painting a grim picture of the aftermath.

According to a regional hospital doctor who spoke anonymously, the situation is catastrophic. “There are about 100 dead. Bodies are lined up within sight at the hospital, with others lying in the corridors. The morgue is full,” the doctor reported. Another medical source corroborated this, stating that “there are dozens of fatalities.”

Videos circulating on social media, though unverified, reveal harrowing scenes of lifeless bodies scattered around. Additional footage shows widespread chaos and confusion in the streets, where people can be seen fleeing or struggling to understand the scale of the violence. The cause of the clashes has sparked widespread concern and condemnation, though details remain scarce.

The government has so far remained silent on the tragedy, offering no official statement or explanation as of Sunday evening. This silence has fueled further speculation and unrest among the local population, many of whom are demanding answers and accountability.

Eyewitness accounts provide some insight into how the violence erupted. According to one witness, “It all started with a dispute over a referee’s decision. Tensions escalated quickly, and fans stormed the field. From there, chaos ensued.” The exact chain of events remains unclear, but the situation quickly spiraled out of control, leading to one of the deadliest incidents in recent sports history.

Local media have reported that the match was part of a sports tournament held in honor of Guinea’s military junta leader, General Mamady Doumbouya. Doumbouya, who came to power in a coup in September 2021, was sworn in as president and has since been consolidating his influence.

The tournaments, widely organized across Guinea in recent weeks, are seen by many as a strategic move to bolster support for Doumbouya’s potential candidacy in the upcoming presidential elections. While these events were meant to celebrate national unity and showcase local talent, Sunday’s tragedy has cast a dark shadow over their purpose, leaving the nation in mourning.

The incident has reignited debates about public safety measures at large gatherings, particularly in politically charged contexts. As the country grapples with the aftermath, questions are being raised about the government’s role in ensuring security and whether this tragedy could have been prevented.

The situation remains fluid, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days. For now, the nation mourns the devastating loss of life and seeks clarity on how a sporting event meant to bring joy and pride could turn into such a horrific tragedy.
