A group of about 200 fighters from Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has defected and joined the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), according to reports, in a move that could affect the course of military operations in the country’s conflict-hit Kordofan region.
The fighters reportedly arrived from Kordofan and joined the army as fighting between the SAF and RSF continues across several parts of Sudan.
The development comes as the conflict, which erupted in April 2023, continues to fuel heavy fighting, particularly in Darfur and Kordofan, while efforts to contain the violence have failed to secure a lasting ceasefire.
Security conditions have remained relatively calm in parts of Blue Nile state, including Kurmuk and surrounding areas, according to the state governor. However, the situation remains volatile amid continued military activity and the use of drones.
The latest developments come as international organisations warn of a worsening humanitarian situation in Darfur and Kordofan, where more than 100,000 people are facing displacement.
Around 21 million people across Sudan are also estimated to require food assistance, highlighting the scale of the humanitarian crisis caused by the prolonged conflict.
Fighting and reported violations have continued in Darfur, including the detention of civilians accused of supporting or belonging to the Sudanese army, particularly in West Darfur and the city of El Geneina.
The reported defections add another dimension to the military dynamics of the conflict, as both sides seek to strengthen their forces and consolidate their positions amid continued fighting across Sudan.
